It is separation anxiety. He is sad and feels alone. Think of it as he just lost his best friend and has nobody to play with. A few things you can do to help is to pay EXTRA attention to the dog for a little while. Call the dog over to sit by you and pet him while you watch tv or if your at hte computer. Take him for a few walks, try teaching him a new trick to get his mind off of the other dog. Also try letting the dog sleep with you either on the bed or put a cage or doggy bed in your bedroom so he does not feel so alone.

Try doing something on a rutine with him so he has something to look forward to such as scheduled walks, or scheduled play time, or scheduled tv and petting time.

You may also want to get a stuffed animal and a few new toys for him. The stuffed animal poses as a companion for him and the toys will divert his attention and give him something to play with.

and one of the biggest things is to get him out and let him visit other dogs. Puppy play dates. Take him to go visit your sisters dog. Take him to dog parks or anywhre that he may be able to be around other dogs for at least an hour.

Hope some of these help, I had the same problem with my little guy. It took him a little bit but now he is doing great.

Aww the little guy misses the other dog :'(
So it has fun when the kids are home but when it's not playing with them then probably it would normally be with the other dog and since it's not there it gets sad. That's so cute yet so sad :'(

They probably became close and became companions. I watched a friends cat for 7 months and when my friend got her again, my cat was walking around constantly meowing really loud, like she was calling for the other cat. She'd walk around non stop circling and looking under things for her. She sleeps with the other cats collar. My friend got me a stuffed animal cat that looks like hers (Siamese) and my cat started to lick it (clean it) and play with it. She was sad when it didn't play back. Your dog could very much be suffering from separation anxiety.
