Home improvements…?

My husband and I just bought a forclosure townhome. We have figured out it was a rental before us. The lady that rented it before us used a lot of oils and hair gels in her hair. There is kind of a nasty film over the whole bathroom. We have finally gotten that all cleaned up. But now under the sink the "wood" shelve is peeling and bubbling from all the hair products. Anyone have any ideas to make it better looking and cleaner so we can put our stuff down there. I don't think contact paper will stick under there.

I would just remove it (get a good pry bar and some goggles), measure it and either cut a new one to size out of 5/8" plywood, or MDF, using the old shelf as a template. (Or if you don’t have tools, take it to your local lumberyard and ask them to do it).

Before putting it back in, throw a coat of KILZ or some other flat primer on it, with mold-inhibiting properties. That way, you can paint it, cover it with contact paper or whatever! You also get rid of the old cosmetic smell…ugh!

If you can sand it down somewhat level, then you can use "Kilz" to paint it and seal up the troublesome hair products so they don’t bleed through the paint. After using Kilz you can paint over it in any color, or just leave it with the Kilz coat.

The peeling is contact paper over particule board. The paticule board got wet and swelled – the bubbles. Why not paint it?
