Plywood instead of drywall–any issues I should be concerned about?
by closet shelving on Saturday, April 3rd, 2010 | 4 Comments
I'm replacing a wall in my rear mud room and would like to install plywood sheets over the insulated exterior walls, instead of hanging drywall. This will give me a lot more flexibility in installing shelving and other fixtures onto the wall. Is there anything I should be concerned about with this idea? Aesthetics aren't important as I will be covering the wall in a bathroom style tile paneling (the mud room doubles as the laundry room). But any other issues?

No other issues. Hang the plywood, and put your shelves where you want them. I have used this method in many kitchens when I’m hanging heavy cabinets.
No you should be fine. the only thing I would say is if your electrical outlets are going to be recessed into the wall is make sure you allow spacing for you electrical boxes. So that when you put the plywood up the boxes are flush with the surface of the wood.
If your going to expose the studs you may as well install some blocking between the studs as well to really give you a secure base for hanging things . while plywood is better than sheetrock it,s not as good at holding shelves as one might think
building code requires sheet rock to retard fire…so you may sheetrock over your plywood
